Our History

In October 1984, an interest group comprising women from the Norwalk and Stamford communities was formed to establish an ongoing community service presence in lower Fairfield County.  These women were known as the “Twenty Pearls.”  Over the next several months, the group met frequently to develop and implement community service goals, as well as plan fundraising events.

On April 27, 1985, the Omicron Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was chartered at LePavillion Hotel in Stamford, Connecticut.  Since its inception, Omicron Upsilon Omega has been committed to providing community service and outreach in the Stamford and Norwalk communities.  Some of our past and current program initiatives include: awarding more than $80,000 in scholarships to area high school students; working with Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Stamford for a teen entrepreneurial and employment program, S.A.G.E. (Students Achieving Greater Excellence); mentoring local youth through after-school and summer programs; Youth Leadership Institute (YLI); tree planting; hosting an annual Pink & Green breakfast for senior citizens; and collaborating with local organizations such as the George Washington Carver Center, the Yerwood Center, NAACP, Urban League, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., 100 Black Men of Stamford, and the Fairfield County Chapter of The Links, Incorporated to further support our service programs.

Omicron Upsilon Omega is proud to be a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, a globally-impactful organization of over 300,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.
